MSCW prepares draft gender policy

The Manipur State Commission for Women has prepared the draft gender policy and it will be submitted to the Government, said Chairperson of the Commission Salam Ulka.
She made the remark during the 17th foundation day of Manipur State Commission for Women held at Lamphelpat DC complex today.
At the observance, S Ulka continued that women empowerment and gender equality are indispensable to bring forth development in human society and protect human rights.
Crime against women will reduce when there is gender equality and it is in this idea that the draft general policy was prepared, she said and added that effective implementation of the gender policy will bridge the gender divide.

Saying that the Commission is in constant touch with the authorities of One Stop Centres set up in different districts to address the grievances of women, S Ulka maintained that the Commission will launch a "Meet the Women" programme very soon to understand the problem of the women and recommend the measures to the Government.
Plan is afoot to organise a series of awareness programmes in every district of the State under the banner "Houro Nupi '' which translates as "Rise Womenfolk '', she added.
A study programme for tribal and Muslim women is in the pipeline, S Ulka informed and maintained that the Commission will also carry out a State level seminar on "Compulsory Marriage Registration Act 2014" .
The Commission will take up a study based programme on crime against women while a proposal has been sent to conduct a State level conference on socio economic condition of Scheduled Caste women, S Ulka added.
On violence, the MSCW Chairperson said that the Commission has been meeting displaced people and conducting health check-up programmes for the people taking refuge since the onset of violence on May 3 .
She continued that the Commission has also taken up several cases pertaining to crime against women amid the violence in Manipur.
The Commission has taken up 59 cases since last September 15 of which 36 have been closed, four kept in abeyance and 19 are still on trial, S Ulka added.
Members of MSCW Thumlip Tiningpham Monsang, Lourembam Dayabati Devi and T Chuongsin Koireng also attended the programme.
As a part of the observance, the Commission visited some relief camps and distributed refreshment to the inmates.
