Naga, Kuki CSOs settle Leimakhong incident

Taking the role of peace mediator, United Naga Council (UNC) has settled the recent torching of one Naga house at Leimakhong Chingmang.
A joint meeting of Kuki Inpi (KI), Sadar Hills, Kuki Chief Association (KCA), Sadar Hills and other Kuki representatives together with UNC Working Committee, Naga Women's Union (NWU) and All Naga Students' Association, Manipur (ANSAM) was held at HHH Hotel, TNK here on June 22 .
During the meeting, representatives of Kuki Inpi and Kuki Chief Association formally tendered apology to the victim's family and the Naga people owning up full responsibility for the 'blatant' torching of the house belonging to Akhon Liangmai at Konsaram, Leimakhong Chingmang.
The Liangmai Naga Council (LNC) and Liangmai Naga Women's Union in good faith accepted the apology from the Kuki bodies.
The Liangmai Naga bodies also expressed displeasure over provocative incidents occurring in the areas and setting up of bunkers in Liangmai Naga villages by the Kukis.
However, in the spirit of forgive and forget and in accordance with Naga customary law, both the parties unanimously agreed to settle the matter once for all, both parties will initiate customary ritual to proceed the negotiation for final settlement, Kuki CSOs of Sadar Hills will bear all expenses for construction of the victim's house in the same place with same scale as it was earlier within two months' time and all the party concerned will exercise restraint during this difficult situation.
Moreover, the Kuki CSOs assured preventive measures to avert all such unwanted incidents and provocations in near future.
The signatories of the agreement included LNC president R Machundoubou, LPNR president T Athonliu, UNC Working Committee convener Samson Remei & member secretary AC Thotso from the Naga CSOs, while from Kuki CSOs included KI, Sadar Hills president James Haokip and SAHILCA president Haokholen Kipgen.
CSOs representatives from both Naga and Kuki communities on Saturday settled the agreement after a befitting customary rituals performed by Kuki side for final settlement at Konsaram village community hall.
