Imphal, February 16 2024:
In solidarity with the nationwide protest called by All India State Government Employees' Federation demanding revocation of the New Pension Scheme (NPS) and restoring the Old Pension Scheme (OPS) instead, employees under the Manipur Government Services Federation staged a sit-in protest at New Secretariat Complex, here, on Friday.
During the sit-in, the protestors demanded revocation of NPS and restoring OPS, filling up the vacant posts in timely manner, and clearing all pending DA/DR.Speaking on the sidelines, All Manipur Primary Teachers' Association working president Naorem Devjani pointed out that while governments of other states have ensured that their employees enjoy their rights and benefits in time, the situation in Manipur is different.
Around 60-70,000 employees are taking care of 27/28 lakh people in the state, but the government is ignoring this fact, with the employees having to request the government multiple times to clear the DA/DR in time.
All of these in turn are affecting the overall economy of the state, she said.
The working president continued that since implementation of NPS in Manipur in 2006, employees are suffering various problems.
As such, she urged for revoking NPS, which is not at all compatible, and restoring OPS instead, or else the economy of the state will further decline.
Urging the state government to justify its existence, Devjani stressed the need for the government to change its thinking of taking action only when the employees carry out strikes or launch protest.
The state government should allow the pensioners to live a decent life by restoring OPS, she added.
