Liquor not a means to fall asleep: Dr Lenin

Imphal, March 17 2024: Stating that the problem of sleep deprivation should not be taken lightly but diagnosed in time, psychiatrist Dr RK Lenin has maintained that drinking is absolutely not the means to make one fall asleep.

Dr RK Lenin, who is also the founder of Share and Care, Wangkhei Ningthem Pukhri Mapal, was speaking during the World Sleep Day observance organised by Share and Care under the theme "Good Sleep for Good Health" at Yening Day Care Centre at Kongpal Kongkham Leikai, on Sunday.

According to Dr Lenin, sleeping disorder or sleep deprivation arises due to some underlying factors in our body.

Therefore, the reason behind sleep deprivation need to be ascertained by consulting a physician.

While cautioning that one should never resort to over-the-counter medicines before consulting a doctor, he pointed out that a person needs at least 6 hours of sleep in a day along with conveying that sleeping disorders could also arise due to anxiety and depressions.

While stating that one should explore means for quality night sleep, he said advised against drinking liquor to induce sleep as there is no reason to link alcohol to sleep.

He also said that less sleep will not only affect long and short term memory but also affect concentration and creativity, and increases chances of getting infected with other diseases.

Further cautioning that having nightmares and unable to get back to sleep are not healthy sign, Dr Lenin said that the inability to sleep also depends on age of the individual as elderly persons experience sleep deprivation more than the youth and middle aged.

Imphal East CMO Dr L Indira, who was present as presidium member, said that every one has experienced sleeping disorders in our lives.

Therefore, to create awareness on sleeping disorders and sleep deprivation problems, the World Sleeping Day has been organised across the globe since 2008.The function was also attended by Manipur Health Services additional director Dr M Kunjabihari and ASHA workers.
