Imphal, December 28 2023:
Social activist Sapamcha Kangleipal has urged the government to take up necessary initiatives to facilitate early resettlement of the displaced families, who are taking refuge in different relief camps across the state, in their native places.
Attending a public meeting of internally displaced persons held at Moirang Kangla on Wednesday, Kangleipal urged the government to take up adequate measures to ensure that the displaced families do not feel discriminated.
They have been living in the relief camps for nearly eight months enduring serious inconveniences arid hardships let alone the pain of losing their properties and loved ones, he observed.
Referring to the charter of demands raised by Meetei families displaced from Churachandpur district, he lamented that the government is undermining their humble proposals instead of reaching out to them.
The silence of the government led to a hunger strike and protestors storming the residence of Moirang MLA Th Shanti following an alleged incident of manhandling one of the displaced persons.
It was unfortunate that the situation took an ugly turn.
Nevertheless, the displaced families taking refuge in different relief camps in Moirang assembly constituency would always remember the assistance provided by the MLA and people, Kangleipal expressed.
Stating that the protestors suspended their hunger strike after chief minister N Biren gave assurance to fulfil their demands within a couple of days, he warned of launching different forms of agitations if the government fails to keep its words.
