Licypriya speaks on climate crisis at IIT, Bombay

Child environment arid climate activist Licypriya Kangujam delivered a lecture at IIT Bombay on Thursday in the presence of top scientists, professors, researchers, and students of the premier institute.
The lecture series, which featured distinguished speakers including ISRO chairman S Somnath, Nobel Laureate Leland Hartwell, Reliance Jio chairman Akash Ambani, former army general Manoj Mukund, former DRDO chairperson G Satheesh Reddy, CERN senior research scientists professor Albert De Roeck, UK Space Research Agency director Harshbir Sangha and others, provided a platform for Licypriya to discuss the challenges she is face as one of the youngest global child climate activists.
During her one-hour interaction, Licypriya shed light on her contributions to the global climate movement and the need to limit Earth's temperature rise under 1.5 degrees Celsius by 2030 .
Recognising her efforts, IIT Bombay applauded Licypriya's work in the held of climate change.
Licypriya's achievements include her pivotal role in enacting India s first air pollution law in 2020, transforming the Taj Mahal into a single-use plastic-free monument in 2022, and influencing Delhi University to mandate tree planting as a graduation requirement.
Licypriya's activism at COP28 was acknowledged by many and a historic agreement to end the era of fossil fuels by 2050 was also signed at the United Nations.
Her inspiring story has even been incorporated in the CBSE English syllabus for Grade 3 and 9 .
In addition to being a Guinness World Record holder for her plastic pollution campaign, Licypriya currently serves as the special envoy of Timor Leste.
Emphasising the urgency of addressing the global climate crisis, Licypriya urged reliance on scientific solutions.
She highlighted the importance of holding leaders accountable for transparent and committed actions to save the planet and secure the future.
"Young people need to hold our lawmakers accountable, transparency and commitments to save our planet and our future," she emphasised.
At the conclusion of her lecture, Licypriya raised the slogan "Meitei Na Yaifare" and appealed to the audience to pray for peace in Manipur, adding a personal touch to her powerful message.
