Imphal, December 28 2023:
Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) Treasurer and former Manipur Legislative Assembly Speaker Thokchom Lokeshwar has asserted that the BJP's double-engine Government has been conspiring to wipe out the Meitei community.
MPCC observed the 139th foundation day of Indian National Congress at Congress Bhavan, BT Road here today.
Speaking on the occasion, Thokchom Lokeshwar stated that the BJP's double-engine Government of the Centre and the State has been conspiring to annihilate the Meitei community.
On account of the double-engine Government's abject failure to bring a solution to the violent conflict which erupted on May 3, 2023, all sections of the people have been suffering untold misery.
It is the Meitei community who have been suffering the most, he said.
Meiteis have their own language, script, religious practice and distinctive culture.
Now a large majority of Meitei feel that the BJP Government has been working deliberately to wipe out the Meitei community, Lokeshwar said.
He then appealed to the BJP Government not to target Meiteis selectively.
Meiteis believe in secularism and they are generally benevolent, compassionate and selfless.
Meiteis have been taking the pivotal role in protecting the integrity of Manipur, he said.
He said that all Congress workers are patriotic and firmly believe that they are citizens of India and Manipur.
Congress party will always strive to protect Manipur from inimical forces, Lokeshwar said and appealed to all sections of the people to stand firm and work collectively to safeguard the integrity of Manipur.
Lokeshwar also appealed to all the communities not to do or say anything which may hurt the sentiments of other communities.
"With the advent of the New Year 2024, let us all work together to make Manipur a peaceful and progressive State", he said.
MPCC working president Kh Devabrata recalled that the Congress party took central role in the freedom struggle of Manipur through non-violent means.
The incumbent BJP Government has no right to continue in power for they have failed miserably to bring a solution to the eight months old widespread violence, he said.
Devabrata appealed to all the people to make the Congress party's Bharat Nyay Yatra a grand success.
The gathering also paid homage to all the Congress leaders who expired between December 2022 and December 2023 by observing silence for two minutes.
