Bandh called to protest arrest of village volunteers

Reacting against the arrest of five village volunteers by Manipur police from Kongba area on September 16, various meira paibi associations and clubs of the state have called a 48-hour Manipur bandh from Monday midnight.
Addressing media persons in this regard at Kakwa SYDA Lampak, here, on Monday, Langthabal Kendra Clubs' Coordinating Committee (LKCCC) president Yumnam Hitler informed that a public meeting in connection with the arrest of the village volunteers held on Monday was attended by representatives of various meira paibi groups and clubs which include LKCCC, Langthabal Kendra Meira Paibi Coordinating Committee, All Kongba Road United Clubs Organisation, Kurao Makhong United Club, Sagolband, Sagolband Apunba Lup and Naharol Yaiphakol.
Those present condemned arrest of the five village volunteers by police in the strongest terms, and unanimously resolved to impose state-wide 48-hour bandh from midnight of Monday.
It also resolved that all members and volunteers of different clubs and organisations of the state will support and enforce the bandh in their respective areas.
The meeting further resolved to launch intense agitation along with support of the public if the five are not released unconditionally within 48 hours.
It also urged authority concerned to not give any kind of threat to the village volunteers who are safeguarding their villages from being attacked by the armed Kukis.
Religious activities, essential services including health and fire services will be exempted from the purview of the bandh, Hitler added.
