Imphal, September 18 2023:
Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) has warned of launching stir to demand unconditional release of the five village volunteers arrested by Manipur police.
Addressing a press meet at its office here on Monday, COCOMI coordinator Jeetendra Ningombam said that the five persons were arrested by police on their way home from the foothill areas where they defended aggression from the other community.
Demanding unconditional release of the five persons, he said that the government should hear the voice of the public and added that COCOMI will launch series of protest if the demand is not met.
The ongoing movement is to defend the state and restore peace, he said while asking the government to refrain from any action which may infuriate the already agitated public.
He further said that it is a common perception that the government has failed to safeguard the lives and properties of its people against the aggression from Chin-Kuki narco-terrorists.
This failure on the part of the government forced the common people to take up arms to protect the territorial integrity of Manipur and fight the aggression.
Despite such compelling situations, the arrest amounts to intimidation of the common people, he said while terming it as unfortunate.
This act of the government would only infuriate the already agitated public and bring more chaos in the society.
COCOMI fears that such acts would potentially shift the direction of the movement and further deteriorate the situation, he added.
