CSIR-NEIST observes World Bamboo Day

The CSIR-NEIST Laboratory Branch in Lamphelpat, Imphal organised World Bamboo Day observance under the theme 'Bamboo, Our Natural Heritage for a Sustainable Future' on Monday.
The event was organised by CSIR-NEIST in collaboration with Indian National Trust on Arts and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), Manipur Branch.
The observance commenced with a bamboo plantation drive within the CSIR-NEIST campus while Apunba Imagi Machasing (AIMS) director Dr Atom Sunil highlighted the significance of bamboo.
Addressing the gathering, CSIR-NEIST chief scientist professor Dr H Birkumar expressed concern over the restive situation gripping Manipur, emphasising their adverse impact on both the populace and the biodiversity of the state.
He underscored the importance of bamboo in conserving Manipur's biodiversity hotspot and preventing soil erosion, particularly given the state's susceptibility to landslides.
Dean of College of Food Technology at Central Agricultural University (CAU) professor Ng Iboyaima discussed various uses of bamboo, including its usage as toothbrush, charcoal, and nutritional food source.
He highlighted the need for extensive bamboo plantation to meet the growing demand for bamboo products and generate substantial revenue.
Punjab National Bank, Imphal Branch AGM Manasij Chakrabarti expressed his pleasure on being part of the World Bamboo Day observance, recognising the critical role bamboo plays in environmental sustainability and livelihood enhancement.
Former additional director of state health services Dr S Manikanta emphasised on cultural and traditional significance of bamboo in society, detailing its historical role in crafting essential tools and its potential to replace environmentally damaging poppy plantations.
Manipur University, department of forest and environment faculty member Dr RK Chingkhei highlighted bamboo's potential to mitigate climate change, emphasising its rapid growth and multifaceted applications, including medicinal use, musical instruments, and tools.
INTACH-Manipur chapter convenor Dr Homen Thangjam shed light on the organisation's role in preserving Manipur's natural heritage, emphasising the crucial role bamboo plays in this endeavour.
In conclusion, the observance of World Bamboo Day brought to light the critical importance of bamboo in conserving the environment, fostering sustainability, and preserving Manipur's rich natural heritage for a prosperous future.
