Congress urges indigenes to unite, save Manipur

Imphal, December 28 2023: As done in different parts of the country, the 139th foundation day of the Indian National Congress (INC), which is the oldest political party in India, was celebrated in Manipur too under the aegis of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) at Congress Bhawan in BT road, on Thursday.

The celebration began with unfurling of the INC flag by MPCC treasurer MLA Th Lokeshwar followed by observance of two minutes' silence as a mark of respect to deceased Congress legislators.

In his address as the chief guest, MLA Lokeshwar said that Congress party firmly believes in secularism and non-violence and censures all acts of vengeance.

While deploring failure of the state government to resolve the current crisis which has been raging for over past months, Th Lokeshwar contended that state and central governments are scheming to wipe out the Meeteis, an indigenous community having own language, script and culture.

Such acts should be stopped under all circumstances, said the Congress MLA, who joined the party in 1991.Even though the central government is harbouring the idea to balkanise Manipur, all indigenous communities in the state should unite and come forward to save Manipur, he exhorted and stressed that with the arrival of the New Year 2024, all contribute towards protecting the territorial integrity of Manipur and in bringing lasting peace in the state.

While appealing all not to post comments on social media platform which could harm sentiment of other communities, the MLA also emphasised that one should first ascertain veracity of any sensitive issue before commenting on the social media.

MPCC vice president Vidyapati Senjam who was present as guest of honour, said that the history of independent India is the history of the Congress party.

It is because of the Congress that the people of the country are able to avail various benefits of the government schemes and programmes, he claimed and opined time has come for the people to teach a befitting lesson to those who are mocking the party.

Presided over by M-PCC working president Kh Devabratta, the function was also attended by members of the party's Mahila Mandal, Seva Dal and other units.

The 139th foundation day of INC was also celebrated by Thoubal District Congress Committee (TDCC) at Congress Bhavan, Thoubal Athokpam on Thursday.

As part of the commemorative event, the INC flag was hoisted and two minutes' silence observed in memory of departed members of TDCC and Block Congress Committee (BCC), Thoubal.

Later, TDCC members distributed edibles to class IV to X students staying in the Relief Students Residential Camp opened at IRE College of Education, Wangjing.

Meanwhile, Kakching BCC and District Congress Committee (DCC) celebrated the foundation day at BCC/DCC office at Kakching Bazar on Thursday with All India Congress Committee (AICC) secretary and Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) working president ex-MLA Victor Keishing as chief guest.

DCC president Md Ab dur Rahman, BCC president Nongmaithem Ashok and BCC, Hiyanglam president Ch Iboyaima, MPCC working president ex-MLA Md Fajur Rahim, MPCC secretaries Kshetrimayum Kennedy, Md Feroz Khan and P Bangkim also attended the event, besides Kakching Municipal Council ex-chairperson Moirangthem Inakhunbi, ex-vice chairperson M Uma, BCC advisor Kshetrimayum Ibohal and Kakching Block Mahila Congress Committee president Moirangthem Pishak.

The observance began with hoisting of party's flag by Victor Keishing followed by observance of two minutes' silence in honour of departed members of BCC and DCC.

Speaking on the occasion, Victor Keishing exhorted party workers to be proud of INC's legacy and work whole heartedly to save the country from BJP's misrule.

Lambasting BJP for endangering state as well as country's security and economy, he also claimed that if BJP continues to be in power it will even change the Constitution of India.
