Nothing to expect from ruling MLAs: MPCC

Imphal, September 15 2023: Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Keisham Meghachandra has said that ruling MLAs are currently camping in the national capital to bring back peace in Manipur by meeting Central leaders but their efforts would be fruitless without the participation of the chief minister.

Addressing media persons at Congress Bhawan, here, on Friday, Meghachandra said the present state government lacks the instinct to take action on its own and seems to be under pressure.

Ruling MLAs are currently camping in New Delhi to meet the Prime Minister and the Union home minister with the hope of bringing peace in Manipur.

However, the absence of chief minister N Biren among them is quite questionable and nothing positive could be expected from the MLA team, he said, while recalling that a large team of BJP ministers and MLAs camped in New Delhi to meet Prime Minister for nearly one month in the recent past but they returned without getting appointment.

Reacting to the report that ruling MLAs who are currently camping in New Delhi would be meeting Union home minister Amit Shah separately, K Meghachandra asked as to why the ministers and MLAs are to meet the Central leader separately and how would the legislators' team talk for peace without their leader.

Instead of camping in New Delhi, it would be better for convening a special session of state assembly and take a concrete resolution to bring back peace in the state, he added.

While stating that the dubious role of Assam Rifles in the present conflict is well known among the public, the MPCC president said that the state government should take up FIR against the force for firing directly to people at Pallel instead of simply condemning the incident.

He also said that removal of Assam Rifles will be possible only when the state cabinet take a decision and mount pressure on the Central leaders.

The mere assurance given by CM verbally to remove AR will not be effective at all and the CM must take the ministers and MLAs to New Delhi and mount pressure on the Centre together, he said, adding that peace will return in Manipur when AR is removed from the state.
