1987 Thadou memo opposed 'Any Kuki tribe'

The Thadou National Council Manipur had way back in 1987 opposed recognition of certain tribes including Kuki or 'Any Kuki tribe' and even warned of imminent conflict among tribes to the extent of bloodshed if the said groups are granted recognition.
The Council even submitted a memorandum to the then Union minister of state for welfare Rajendra Kumari Vajpai on November 17, 1987 .
The memorandum said that the proposed Bill for introduction in Parliament for recognition of certain tribes including Kuki or any Kuki tribe will shatter the prevailing peaceful condition of tribes in Manipur.
The memorandum also called for dropping the Bill in public interest while warning that there is imminent danger of conflict to the extent of bloodshed among the tribes.
The memorandum signed by the then Thadou National Council Manipur president Paolen Haokip opposed the Bill for recognition of 30 tribes.
Tribes mentioned in the Bill for recognition were Aimol, Baite, Biate/Biete, Chiru, Chothe, Chongloi, Doungel, Gangte, Guite, Hang-shing, Haokip, Hmar, Khongsai, Kipgen, Kom, Manlun Machong, Mate, Milhiem, Neihchiel, Paite, Purum, Ralte, Simte, Sukte, Tiddim Chin, Thadou, Touthang, Tungdim, Vaiphei and Zou.
