Nine injured in gunfight

Imphal, June 12 2023:
At least nine people were injured after a gun-fight broke out between suspected Kuki militants and a group of Meitei villag-ers near Khamenlok village on Monday.
According to a report, heavy exchange of firing ensued between suspect-ed Kuki militants and vol-unteers formed to guard Meitei village around 10am Monday, after the former rained bullets at the village.
Of the volunteers guard-ing the village and join-ing the retaliation, nine suffered gunshot wounds and were taken to differ-ent hospitals.
The injured have been identified as from Oken Meitei (30), Ng, angom Rakesh Singh (20), Hao - rungbam Helen Meitei (33), Sorakhaibam Bunty Singh (27), Thangjam Bimol Meitei (40), Ngangbam Amarjit (35), Thokchom Prem (18), Naorem Birla (34) and Moi-rangthem Jiten (53) .
Some of the injured villages speculated that there might be casualties and injuries among the Kuki militants during the gunfight on the border of Imphal East and Kangpokpi districts.
Of the injured condition of one is stated to be serious.
Sporadic firing continued for some time, as addition-al forces were sent there to bring the situation under control, police said.
Meanwhile, an Army offi-cial said a bridge at Leitan-pokpi in Imphal East district was made serviceable by the force after it was damaged by miscreants last month.
The repaired bridge now facilitates fast transportation of relief material to Leitan-pokpi, Champai and Pukhao Phurju localities, the official said.
