Imphal, April 02 2010:
Street vendors along the foothpath in front of the temporary market shed of Khwairamband Bazar have strongly opposed the move to evict them to give place to women vendors of Samu Makhong.
The street vendors have also demanded an alternative place for them.
It is said that around 200 street vendors have been selling various goods like Ngari, Rasgoola, vegetables, etc from along the footpath behind the office of Family Welfare for over 4 years now.
However, the area has been barricaded with CI sheets without giving any prior information on the night of March 28 .
From today, women vendors from Samu Makhong started shifting to this footpath.
Thus, the earlier street vendors have no place to sell their wares.
Talking to mediapersons in this connection, the displaced street vendors asserted that even if the Govt said that it if illegal for them to sell goods along the footpath, Imphal Municipality has been levying Rs 20 thrice a month from each of the street vendors.
If at all it is illegal to sell goods along the footpath, then why the license holder women vendors have been brought along the same footpath, they questioned, while demanding an alternative place for them.
