Gopal Sharma, retired IPS officer and former DGP of Jammu & Kashmir, who has been appointed as the Security Advisor to the Chief Minister, arrived in Imphal today.
He is likely to assume office soon, most possibly tomorrow.
State government on the advice of the Union Home Minister, P Chidambaram has decided to appoint a security advisor to the Chief Minister, O Ibobi to assist him in dealing with the law and order and internal security in the trouble-prone state.
State home department issued the order appointing Gopal Sharma on March 18 last.
Government has already allocated official quarters and arranged office at the Old secretariat building, Imphal for the advisor to CM.
Gopal Sharma, former DGP of Jammu and Kashmir and had led many anti-militancy operations during his tenure as police chief in the state, was selected by the government of Manipur among the panel of names along with their CVs provided by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs for appointment as security advisor to the Manipur government.
State government decided to appoint the retired IPS officer, Gopal Sharma longest service police officer of the country as Security Advisor to the Chief Minister in the first week of March last.
Earlier, from the penal of three retired IPS officers provided by the MHA, Manipur government chosen MI Kumawat, IPS (Retired), former DG, BSF and SS (IS), MHA for the post but Kumawat reportedly declined the post with the best reason known to him only.
Mention may be made here that the Centre had recently directed the NE states facing insurgency problems to appoint a Security Advisor each on the recommendation of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.
Former Jammu & Kashmir Director General of Police, Gopal Sharma was the Director General of Special Services Bureau (SSB).
A 1972 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, Sharma who belongs to Jammu & Kashmir State cadre, had also worked as Security Advisor to the former Chief Minister of J& K, Ghulam Nabi Azad.
Elevated to the rank of DGP in J&K in 2003, he was the longest serving Police chief of the state, and had served for more than four years.
During his tenure in that trouble-torn state, he led many anti-militancy operations in Jammu and Kashmir.
