Conflict wake-up call for indigenes: CM

In continuation of distribution of benefits under Special Scheme for Education of Children at Relief Camps for Labour Card Holders, a distribution programme was organised by Manipur Building and Other Construction Workers' Welfare Board at the Chief Minister's Secretariat, here, on Friday.
During the programme, Chief Minister N Biren Singh handed over regenerated labour cards and financial assistance of Rs 5,000 under the scheme to the labour card holders staying in different relief camps.
Speaking as chief guest of the event, CM Biren regretted that many people have been facing hardships due to the present conflict in the state.
Likening the conflict to a wake-up call for the indigenous people of Manipur, he informed that many displaced people whose houses were not burnt down, but had to flee their homes out of fear in the early days of the conflict, have now returned to their original places of settlement.
He continued that experts from departments like Agriculture, Horticulture, Industries and others had been interacting and assisting the displaced people, so that they could take up Suitable activities for earning their livelihood.
The CM further informed that the government would start providing blankets to relief camps very soon, in view of onset of the winter season.
He also stated that in addition to deployment of around 2,500 personnel of security forces for safeguarding farmers while taking up agricultural activities, compensation would be provided to those farmers whose agricultural land could not be cultivated due to the present conflict.
Thus, the Home Ministry has sanctioned an amount of Rs 38.6 crore for the same, he said, while stating that the deputy commissioners concerned would survey agricultural farms which could not been cultivated for assessing the loss suffered by the farmers.
Biren also informed that 98 per cent of students staying in relief camps set up in valley areas had been admitted to the nearest schools.
However, it is less for students staying in relief camps set up in Churachandpur, Kangpokpi and Tengnoupal districts, he conveyed Mentioning that around 3,000 families have been relocated from relief camps to the newly-constructed prefabricated houses, he informed that the central government would provide financial assistance for construction of new houses, for those whose houses had been burnt down.
The financial assistance would be given in two to three instalments through the deputy commissioners concerned, the CM stated, adding that the government had started the process for the same.
He assured that the government would put in all possible efforts for aiding the affected people.
The programme was also attended by ministers, MLAs, chairman of Manipur Building and Other Construction Workers' Welfare Board, chief secretary, government officials and labour card holders staying at different relief camps, among others.
