Oil Palm Based Intercropping System launched

Central Agriculture University (CAU) Imphal, Vice Chancellor, Dr Anupham Mishra today launched "Oil Palm Based Intercropping System" by planting Oil Palm seedlings at NEC, Central Farm, CAU, Imphal.
The event was attended by Director of Extension Education, CAU Imphal, Prof Ph Ranjit Sharma; Director of Research, Dr Lalita Mohan Garnayak; Dean College of Agriculture, CAU Imphal, Prof Indira Sarangthem; Dean College of Food Technology, Dr Ng Iboyaima and faculty members.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof Indira Sarangthem shared that under the Centre Of Excellence Oil Palm Scheme of Indian Oil Palm Research Institute, Government of India, plantation of Tenera variety Oil Palam was launched today by the VC of CAU Imphal.
She added that about 143 oil palm saplings can be planted in an area of one hectare maintaining a distance of 9 metre between the saplings.
She also asserted that oil palm saplings should be planted in a triangular form and not in a single line.
Pointing out that it takes 4/5 years for oil palms to bear fruits, Prof Indira stated that intercropping can be carried out by planting pineapple or G9 banana in the meantime to generate more income for the farmers.
