Imphal, July 26 2010:
Widespread treatment of bed nets with anti-mosquito chemicals, continuous fogging operations, extensive use of DDT and other preventive measures have able to control the spreading of Japanese Encephalitis (JE) further in the state, said state Director of National Vector Borne Diseases Control Programme, Dr H Nimaichand in an ITBN programme organized by All Manipur Anti-Drug Association at Samurou today.
Dr Nimaichand further said that about one lakh bed nets were treated with anti-mosquito chemicals during the months of June and July.
The number is around three lakh if counted from January this year, he said.
It is estimated that about 16,000 bed nets are currently used in the state.
In hill districts DDT are being extensively used in piggeries and other places which are known to be breeding grounds of mosquitoes.
Malathion fogging operations are carried out in war footing.
Dr Nimaichand added that though lives of 6 individuals were lost to JE, 465 individuals had been from the disease.
The number of persons coming for treatment from JE is also reducing.
