Imphal, July 26 2010:
Nearly six years after the Assam Rifles left the Kangla Fort, it is apparent that the historic site is still close to the heart of the paramilitary force as it has erected a gate similar to the western gate of Kangla at its Mantripukhri garrison today.
In a glittering function, DG Assam Rifles, Lt Gen KS Yadava inaugurated the gate with the unveiling of the inauguration plaque amidst soothing melodies of pena and dholak today.
Christened 'Kangla Gate', it has been constructed at the entrance of the IGAR (South) garrison, Mantripukhri, the headquarters of Assam Rifles administration in Manipur.

Assam Rifles Wives Welfare Association (ARWWA) President Meenakshi Yadava made the occasion even more special with her presence and joined the DG in inaugurating the historic gate by cutting the ceremonial ribbon.
She also distributed sweets to school children who were present to witness the grand event.
According to Assam Rifles sources, the gate is dedicated to the historical legacy of Manipur as well as a tribute to the glorious decades long presence of the paramilitary force in the State.
It is a telling testimony of the selfless love and respect of Assam Rifles for the people of Manipur, it added.
Built in resemblance to the western gate of Kangla fort, the structure was constructed within six months.
IGAR (S) Maj Gen CA Krishnan, his wife Sandhya Krishnan, Sector Commanders, COs of different units, all ranks of Mantripukhri garrison, AR school children and teachers were also present in the function.
It may be mentioned that Kangla Fort was occupied by Assam Rifles for long which became a major discontent to the people of the State.
In 1992, MM Jacob, the then Minister of State for Home announced that Assam Rifles would hand over the historic fort to the State Government.
It finally became true on November 20, 2004 when Prime Minister Manmohan Singh handed over the historic Kangla Fort to the State Government.
