Students of GP Women College today staged a sit-in protest against the monetary demand served to the faculty of the College by some underground outfits.
The students demanded to make education a free zone.
General Secretary Students' Union of the college, Ch Priyorika said that the academic atmosphere of the college has been disturbed due to monetary demand and threats to the faculty of by some UG groups.
She said that lecturers of the college are unable concentrate on teaching students owing to the extortion demand and in such situation apprehension of unable to cover the syllabi persist among the students as academic session is about to end.
A lecturer of the college taking part in the protest disclosed that some individuals identifying themselves as members of KCP and UNLF demanded Rs 4,000 to Rs 5,000 from the monthly salary of each of the lecturer of the college as "one-time tax" for the current year.
The demand was served through the principal of the college, Y Chandrasakhi, she revealed adding that the college has 80 lecturers in all.
Such demand had also been fulfilled in the past, she added.
