Imphal, September 09 2023:
If the phenomenon of climate change is not dealt properly, the future generation will face more dire challenges, said T Brajakumar, Director of the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change.
Brajakumar was speaking as one of the guest of honours at "Himalayan Day" observation programme hosted jointly by Green Day Foundation along with Nongchup Pukkei Langei OPC, Nongpok Pukkei Langei OPC and Vibha Vani Manipur in association with Himalayan Environmental Studies and Conservation Organisation (HESCO) and Manipur Organic Mission Agency (MOMA) .
The programme was organised on the theme "Addressing Climate Change and Disaster Preparedness".
A seminar on the topic "Development of Framework for role of FPOs on Climate Resilience Agriculture" was also held as a part of the programme.
Former Dean of Central Agriculture University, Prof Dr N Iboton attended the programme as chief guest in the presence of Scientist In-Charge of IBSD, Aizawl and president of Vibha Vani Manipur, Ch Brajakishore as functional president; T Brajakumar, Director of the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change and environmentalist Rajesh Salam as guest of honours.
Speaking as an expert during the seminar, T Brajakumar said the future is grim if the ever changing climate across the world is not tackled properly.
The change is real and happening rapidly, he observed.
The changes which took hundreds of years earlier are now occurring in a span of a few decades, he said and took examples of major rivers in Imphal which were once perennial but have unexpectedly become seasonal in the past few years.
Today's generation are lucky that they could still buy water in case of scarcity but the future generation may not be able to enjoy the same if the climate change is left unchecked now, he said.
There is no dearth of researchers in Manipur who are experts on the matter but authorities concerned are yet to incorporate them and their findings to chalk out a policy on how to fight climate change till date, he rued.
He also called upon environmental researchers to stress more on policy based research.
For instance, they can conduct research on the drying up of Imphal river and ways to restore its former self, he said.
The gap between the researchers and the Government has also facilitated the climate change to occur unabated, he said.
On the observation of the day, Brajakumar said that the observation of Himalayan Day originates from Uttarakhand and it is a very significant day.
Speaking at the programme, chief executive officer of the Green Foundation, U Himat said that the day is observed in view of the role of Himalayas in maintaining climatic conditions.
The day is specifically observed to discuss dos and don'ts to fight climate change.
