Imphal, April 02 2010:
Owing to heavy downpour in the last five/six days, lanes and by-lanes in many localities within Imphal Municipal area have been flooded as drains were deluged.
Even as the pre-monsoon downpour provided much respite from the prolonged dry spell, the downpour flooded many localities in Imphal urban and suburban areas, partly due to choked drains and partly due to narrow drains or total absence of it.
Different localities within 27 wards of Imphal Municipal Council which cover assembly segments of Sagolband, Keishamthong, Uripok, Thangmeiband, Yaiskul, Singjamei and Wangkhei are facing severe inconveniences as many of their homesteads or lanes have
been flooded.
With the drains inadequate to drain away water, the overflowing water have flooded many lanes and by-lanes of several localities as well as courtyards.
Sagolband A/C is the most affected one.
Sapam Leikai, Leishangthem Leikai, Okram Leikai, Oinam Thingel of Singjamei A/C and Meino Leirak, Kangabam Leikai, Thiyam Leikai, Jailor Leirak, Maisnam Leikai, Nepram Menjor Leikai, Leimajam Leikai etc, all located within Sagolband A/C have been affected.
Many household compounds and in some cases, houses have been water-logged.
Councillor of Sagolband A/C Ward No 9 Seram Sunil said that the people are more worried about the steady inundation caused by overflowing drains after cessation of rain than the sudden deluge caused by heavy downpour.
The local people including Sunil have been working hard to clear choked drains at different points since yesterday.
Water drainage was affected as the drains have been choked at different points.
Waishel Maril, the main drainage outlet for Sagolband and Keishamthong ACs is unable to carry away the excessive rain because the drain is choked by garbage and waste material at different points, Sunil said.
Expressing desire that the Government take up long term plan to make Waishel Maril an obstacle free drainage system, the Councillor opined that the Government should take up a project for Waishel Maril in the line of the Nambul River project.
Naorem Jagadishwar, a resident of Meino Leirak, Maisnam Leikai said that his house has been water-logged since four days back.
Water is seeping into the house, he said.
Ten years back, this phenomenon of being flooded at the slightest downpour was not seen in the locality, but today it has become a regular occurrence, he rued.
