KIWT 2022: Biggest sports festival of Kpi town kicks off

The 18th edition of Kangpokpi Inter Ward Tournament, 2022 kicked off on Thursday at Brigadier M Thomas ground, Kangpokpi.
Kangpokpi Inter Ward Tournament is the biggest and most prestigious sports festival of Kangpokpi town organised annually by Kangpokpi Youth Union in January, with all the 18 Wards/Veng participating in the event.
The main events of the an nual sports event are football and volleyball.
In football, there are main, veteran and under-15 while in volleyball there are men's and women's volleyball competitions.
One team each from the 18 wards is mandatory to participate in the main football and both men's and women's volleyball.
The opening ceremony was attended by James Doujapao Haokip, MCS, Chief Executive Officer, Sadar Hills Autonomous District Council Kangpokpi, as chief guest while L Kipgen, social worker, and Angam Leivon, chairman Kangpokpi Town Committee, attended as guest of honour and functional president respectively.
Kangpokpi Youth Union president, Haolet Khongsai led the presentation ceremony of the guests during his welcome speech after the chief guest hoisted the flag of KYU in the presence of other dignitaries.
The opening match in the main football category between defending champion Vengthah and Ahsijolneng Veng kicked off after inspection of players by the dignitaries.
Despite both teams had multiple chances, they failed to break the ice and the opening match was ended in a goalless draw.
The defending champion team Vengthah players wore black armbands during the match to pay tribute to the departed soul of Pagin Kipgen, who had been the team manager for the past many years in the ward tournament for the team.
Ngambom veng had a dramatic 4-2 win over Enjakhup veng in qn impressive second match.
Lalgunmang of Ngambom Veng became the first to scored in the tournament as he found the opening in the 13th minute before Seibem (16th), Manggou (30th), and Mamang (59th) added one goal each for the team while the newly created ward Enjakhup Veng striker Letminlun became the first to score for the ward in the 20th minute before Letlal added goal in the 45th minute to be on the losing side.
The participating wards are Jonlhing Veng, Tintong Veng, Vengthah, Chengjapao Veng, Lamdil Veng, Lendou Veng, Sipinthei Veng, Ngambom Veng, Japhal Veng, Dr GG Crozier Veng, Khupting Veng, Moltinchan Veng, Kilkhong Veng, Kholmun Veng, Phungtin Veng, Nanglhun Veng, Ahsijolneng Veng and Enjakhup Veng.
In the main football, all the 18 wards are divided into four pools with four teams each in two pools and five teams each in another two pools for the league round where only two teams in each pool will be qualified for the knockout round.
In Veteran football, out of the 18 wards, 16 wards have registered for the event and they are divided into four pools with four teams each in each pool where only two teams from each pool will be qualified for the knockout round.
With 15 teams from 18 wards, under-15 football will be held on a knockout basis from January 17 while Veteran football and men's and women's volleyball will begin from January 17 .
In main football on Friday, Jonlhing Veng will play Lamdil Veng in the first match at 11:00 am while Dr GG Crozier Veng and Ahsijolneng Veng will play in the second match at 1:00 pm .
