Assam amass 25 medals as KIO NE Zone Karate C'ship gets underway

Imphal, January 08 2022:
KIO-North East Zone Karate Championship 2021 hosted by the Manipur Amateur Karate-Do Association kicked off today at Indoor Stadium, Khuman Lampak Sports Complex.
188 athletes from Assam, 80 from Arunachal Pradesh, 139 from Manipur, 17 from Meghalaya and 11 from Nagaland are participating in this zonal event.
The inaugural function of the championship was attended by Sunil Elangbam, general secretary, Manipur Olympic Association; Kirankumar Thangjam, president KIO, North East Zone Federation; L Ibomcha, Dronacharya Awardee and Deputy Director, SAI-STC; L Meghabarana, former president, All Manipur Taekwondo Association and Md Bashir Ahamed, president, Imphal East District Shitor Ryu Karate Association as presidium members.
The opening day of the championship saw Assam dominating events and amassing 25 medals including 6 gold, 8 silver and 11 bronze.
Hosts Manipur are, on the other hand, following closely with 6 gold, 4 silver and 10 bronze medals.
Day 1 highlight
In the Kata event for U-21 male, L Premjit Singh got the better of Assam's Abhinash Pattar to win the gold medal.
Sh Netrajit of Manipur and Rahul Nath of Assam were third and fourth in this event.
In the U-21 kata event for females, Nani Leriak of Arunachal bagged the gold medal finishing ahead of Chantanika Pumi of Assam.
H Rashi Devi of Manipur and Longom Dakpe of Arunachal Pradesh settled for bronze medals in this event.
Athletes winning gold medals in other events for Assam are Hemphu Bongjang (Cadet Boys Kata, cadet boys -52 kg kumite), Sanchita Sarma (Cadet Girls Kata), Ananta Kanti (Junior Boys Kata), Samvid Deka (Cadet Boys -70 kg kumite) and Ardil Bordoloi (Cadet Boys +70 kg kumite).
Other Manipuri athletes who won gold medal are L Dorita Chanu (Junior Girls Kata), L Yaiphaba (Senior Male Kata), Tajijur Rahaman (Cadet Boys -57 kg kumite), Ph Nelson (Junior Boys -55 kg kumite) and Soibam James (Senior Male -55 kg kumite) .
