Outreach programme on India's freedom struggle with special focus on Manipuri freedom fighters held

An integrated communication and outreach programme (ICOP) with a 2-day photo exhibition on Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav on India's Freedom Struggle with special focus on Manipuri freedom fighters was held at Manipur University today.
The programme was jointly organised by the Department of Law, Manipur University and the Regional Outreach Bureau, Imphal, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India, said a press release by Regional Outreach Bureau, Imphal.
Professor N Lokendra Singh, Vice-Chancellor, Manipur University, B Narayanan, Additional DG(Region), Imphal, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Professor W Chandbabu Singh, Registrar, Manipur University and Dr Y Premananda Singh, Head of Department of Law, Manipur University attended the event as the presidium members.
Speaking on the occasion, Professor N Lokendra Singh elaborated on the chain of events which led to the involvement of Manipuri Prince Sana Chahi Ahum @Narendrajit Singh to fight against the British imperialism at Chittagong during the First War of India's Independence, 1857.He also explained why King Kulachandra and 23 others were exiled at Mount Harriet which is now known as Mount Manipur.
B Narayanan informed the gathering that the Government of India is trying to highlight the freedom struggle from the North East as it was totally ignored earlier.
Naming of Mt Harriet as Mt Manipur is a part of the effort for highlighting sacrifices of the unsung heroes from Manipur, he added.
During interaction session, LLM students also questioned the legal validity of the trial of Bir Tikendrajit and others by British after the Battle of Khongjom.
Private Registered Troupe (PRT) of ROB, Imphal, M/s Achouba Artiste Association played a drama on Nupi Lal, 1939 as part of the programme, added the press release.
