Thoubal, January 18 2023:
People for Animals, Manipur has drawn the attention of the State Government on Thoubal River stating that the Nephelometric Turbidity Unit (NTU) of the river has crossed 400, when the normal NTU level during winter season ought to be between 5 and 8.It may be noted that NTU is the unit used to measure the turbidity (opaqueness of a fluid due to the presence of.
suspended solids/particles) of fluids, including water.
In a statement, People for Animals Manipur highlighted the poor condition of the river water and cited sand mining, sand washing and draining as the major causes of this problem.
"Due to the dirty/muddy water, aquatic life seems to have dwindled considerably and scenes of locals bathing in the river and animals drinking from it are a thing of the past", it added.
It also added that at a time when rainfall is scarce, the condition of river water has posed an immense problem to the underprivileged people who cannot afford to buy water for their needs.
"Despite dedicated efforts of Manipur DG in constituting a police team to cull stone/sand mining, the water continues to run muddy rendering it unusable" it claimed.
People for Animals further urged the State Government to look into the matter and take up measures to save the river.
