Harvesting of organic ginger begins in Ukhrul village

Harvesting of organic ginger cultivated by Sivathei Farmers' Producer Company in Phalee village of Ukhrul district under phase 3 of Mission Organic Value Chain Development for North Eastern Region (MOVCDNER) has begun from Wednesday.
The FPC planted ginger in an area of around five hectares in Phalee village of Ukhrul district in February last year.
Manipur Organ ic Mission Agency (MOMA) project director and addition al director of horticulture & soil conservation K Devdutta Sharma visited the farm site on Wednesday to assess the production and its quality.
Inspecting the harvest work, Devdutta said that gingers were planted in Chatrik, Chingjaroi, Tolloi and Phalee villages of the district in February last year under organic farming method as part of phase 3 of MOVCDNER.
Altogether 500 registered farmers of Sivathei FPC cultivated the ginger and 20 of them are from Phalee village, he said.
The farmers were also educated on the post harvesting practice for preserving the ginger.
MOMA is hopeful of a production of 10 to 20 MT of ginger from Phalee village alone.
MOMA will buy back the ginger at the rate of Rs 20 per kg.
Some companies have contacted MOMA with a demand of 2000 MT of dried ginger.
It would require around 1.6 lakh MT of fresh ginger to produce 2000 MT of 'dried ginger.
The agency had already sent samples of the ginger to test for non-organic residues.
Once the test results came negative of non-organic residues, MOMA will tag it as organic product and begin process for export, Devdutta informed and added that such initiatives will help in improving farmers' income.
