Imphal, January 18 2023:
Information Centre for Hill Areas Manipur (ICHAM) president Yuimi Haoram has stated that the government alone should not bear the responsibility for curbing poppy cultivation in the state, adding that both the CSOs and the people need to extend their support in this regard.
Addressing a press meet at Nagaram, here, on Wednesday, Yuimi appreciated the anti-poppy drive launched by CM N Biren as part of his 'War on Drugs' campaign.
In support of this initiative, ICHAM had organised many awareness programmes and also adopted various resolutions, he said.
Stressing the need for the CSOs and people of the state to extend whole hearted support to the campaign, Yuimi said that the responsibility should not be placed on government's shoulder all alone.
It is only right to put an end to poppy cultivation for the sake of future generations, the president contended.
ICHAM general secretary DS Panmei informed that it organised an anti-poppy cultivation drive in Churachandpur district on January 5 in association with the local village chiefs and CSO leaders.
The locals assured of curbing all poppy cultivations within the next 10 days, he conveyed.
Another awareness programme was organised in Saikul, in addition to anti-poppy drives conducted at Huisi village in Ukhrul district including banishment of families refusing to do so by the village authority.
Thus, he called for concerted efforts to curb poppy cultivation in the state completely.
