National girl child week underway in Ukhrul

Ukhrul, January 18 2023:
A five-day observance of National Girl Child Week began here in Ukhrul town on Wednesday.
The inaugural function of the event focusing on girl child's education and empowerment under Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) was organised by Integrated Child Development Service (ICDS), Ukhrul at DRDA Hall, Mini-Secretariat, Ukhrul.
Ukhrul deputy commissioner Krishna Kumar, who attended the event as chief guest, called for the society to welcome every girl child bom in their family and added that they are the backbone of the future of the society.
Stating that every parent needs to ensure equal treatment of both boys and girls in the family, he stressed that the government particularly, ICDS should take proper initiatives towards empowering girls in the region.
During the opening ceremony, a signature campaign was held and pledge read out.
The pledge read that "every citizen in the country should act in all possible ways individually and collectively to eliminate gender biased discrimination and sex selection that threatens the birth and the survival of girls" .
It called for provision of education to girl child and for ensuring that girls are born, loved and nurtured to be come equal and empowered citizens of the country.
Beti Bachao Beti Padhao programme was initially introduced on January 22, 2015 across the country with an aim to bridge the gap in sex ratio in India.
The programme was initiated by three ministries - ministry of women and child; ministry of health & family welfare; and ministry of education.
The programme was specially meant to empower female child and reduce discrimination in the society.
DPO, ICDS AW Shimreipam, AC to DC Ukhrul & SDO LM Block A Rohinikumar and PO, DRDA Ngamreiwung also attended the event.
