Imphal, July 29 2021:
With the sunken portion at two places remaining unattended by authority concerned, the main lifeline of the state, Imphal-Dimapur road, could be completely cut-off whenever heavy rain occurs.
According to members of Manipur Drivers' Association and Senapati Truck Drivers' Union, around 400-500 feet long crack has occurred in the middle of the road near Tadu-bi and another crack measuring around 200 feet is also visible on the northern side of Mao police station and three nearby buildings have slightly inclined.
A team of the two drivers' bodies inspected the sites on Wednesday.
According to Manipur Drivers' Association secretary Kshetrimayum Sanjay, the road slide near Mao Gate has been occurring since around 20 years back but government never repaired it properly and hence condition of the road worsened.
The road could be saved if authority concerned constructs a retaining wall properly, he said, adding that three buildings have slightly inclined at the area and there is possibility of completely cutting-off of the road if heavy rain occurs.
Drawing attention of the government for taking up immediate necessary action, Sanjay said that the suffering of the people during COVID-19 would deepen if the road snaps at this difficult time.
A functionary of Senapati Truck Drivers' Union also urged state government to give special attention to the development of the highway which serves as an important lifeline for the people of the state.
Entire people of the state would suffer amidst the pandemic if the road collapses, the functionary said and appealed to government to repair the road before it is too late.
