Imphal, September 25 2014:
A four-day Festival of Classical Manipuri Solo Dance was inaugurated by Dr RK Nimai, Consultant to the Government of Manipur at Maharaja Chandrakriti auditorium today.
The festival is jointly organized by Manipur State Kala Akademi, Imphal and Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi.
The inauguration function was attended by Dr RK Nimai as chief guest and Padmashree RK Singhajit Singh, Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellow, as president.
Speaking at the occasion, RK Nimai said that Manipuri classical dance is originally a group dance.
However, at some point of time in the past, only a few selected dancers were sent to perform in other States and countries due to financial constraints, and thus started the trend of solo performances.
He added that solo dances were choreographed without disturbing the original form of Manipuri classical dance.
Saying that solo dance performance is gaining popularity in the State as well as in other States and countries, the retired bureaucrat also urged the dance Gurus, performers and dancers to keep the original form of Manipuri classical dance intact.
Rajkumari Sanathoi and Th Pural Devi gave solo performances after the inaugural function.
