Imphal, January 10 2014 :
Impressed with the historically significant and unique women-only Ima Keithels of Khwairamband Keithel (market), National Commission for Women (NCW) Chairperson Mamta Sharma said she would explore possibility of setting up market complexes exclusively run by women traders in other parts of the country.
Speaking as the functional president during an interactive meeting with representatives of women vendors of the three Ima Keithels at Classic Hotel today, Mamta said Manipuri womenfolk preserving unique identity of the historic market place not only merits appreciation but also deserve to be emulated by their counter-parts in other States.
Contrary to exemplary role of the North East women in diverse issues, she nevertheless regretted that despite valour and diligence by the region's womenfolk their social status remains more or less static inspite of rapid change in the social structure.
Sharing her view that present trend of female members of a family not entitled to inherit family property merit reintrospection, the Chairperson also asserted that effective and judicious implementation of legislations and not merely its enactment could check crime against women and children.
She also emphasised on collective effort by the police, press and politician to prevent crime against women and children as well as make the perpetrators repent for the criminal acts.
As chief guest of the event, Social Welfare Minister AK Mirabai Devi exuding confidence that determination and valour of Manipuri womenfolk will certainly promote their status sooner than later, also pledged all possible assistance and cooperation in making Manipur State commision for Women more vibrant and effective.
A bi-lingual booklet entitled 'A violence-free home, a woman's right' was also released at the occasion.
