Sensitisation on ICTC conducted

A one-day full site sensitisation programme on ICTC was held at Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, Imphal today.
The programme was organised jointly by Microbiology Department of RIMS and MACS.
Inaugurating the programme which was participated by doctors, nurses, nursing teachers and other health workers, Prof S.Sekharjit, Director of RIMS, underlined the need to create awareness among the people so that the dreaded disease of AIDS could be prevented.
There is need to prevent the disease including transmission from mothers to children, he added.
In his key note address, Prof Brajachand of the Microbiology Department said that the first HIV case was detected in the US in 1981.The first cases of HIV positive were detected in Chennai in India in 1986 .
In case of Manipur, the first case of HIV positive was detected in October 1989 .
HIV positive prevalence has declined from 41% in 2000 to 27% in 2011 in Manipur and it is a very encouraging sign, Prof Brajachand said.
However, he added that there should be no room for complacency since Manipur is still pegged in the five high risk States in the country.
