Manipur is among the northeastern states with high occurrence of road accidents.
As many as 746 people were killed in 3216 road accidents during the last five years in the State.
According to an official of Northeastern States' Road Investment Programme of State Public Works Department, India is also among the countries with high occurrence of road accidents.
Globally, road accidents claim more lives than the natural calamities and epidemics.
Altogether 3216 road accidents occurred in Manipur from 2008 to 2012 with death of 746 people.
There were 573 road accidents with 151 deaths in 2008, 578 road accidents with 125 deaths in 2009, 602 road accidents with 158 deaths in 2010, 692 road accidents with 158 deaths in 2011 and 771 road accidents with 158 deaths in 2012 .
The official further noted that there are three elements for ensuring road safety namely education, enforcement and engineering.
Education is related to proper knowledge on driving vehicles, while enforcement is to do with penalizing the defaulters for violation of traffic laws and rules.
On the other hand, engineering is essential in planning and executing road development works from time to time and also in the development of user-friendly vehicles that would minimize road accidents and human casualties.
