Imphal, January 10 2014 :
All Manipur Progressive Farmers' Association (AMPFA) celebrated its 17th foundation day at Phungchongjan Village in Churachandpur district yesterday.
Speaking on the occasion, President of AMPFA Joy Nongmaithem said that the farmers of the State need to enhance agricultural productivity in order to make the State "self-reliant in food".
More than six lakh metric tons of food grains are required annually by the State, but the production is very low in the State.
The State Govern-ment is not trying to enhance agriculture, rather it is demolishing the agricultural land by constructing police stations and other buildings, he noted.
The foundation day was also attended by Chieftain of Phungchanjang Village S Chungyabam Kom and Chieftain of Paringmakhong Village Khaisa.
The members of All Manipur Progressive Farmers' Association presented three bags of maize and lady's finger seeds along with a 500-litre water tank to the villagers of Phungchongjan.
