State hands red beacon use report to Ministry

Consequent to the August ruling by the Supreme Court directing the Central as well as the State Governments to prohibit use of red beacon light and blaring of siren by VIP entourages, the Ministry of Road Transport is likely to put in place a uniform guideline on the matter.
Confiding that the State Transport Department in response to the Ministry's intimation has already provided a detailed report about the existing system on the use of red beacon light and siren by VIPs, an informed source said that the Ministry is likely to soon issue uniform guidelines on the matter to all the States.
It is also said the Government is working on a plan for the safety of women passengers in public transport system in the State along with effective measures to streamline parking and vehicular traffic.
At the national level issues related to road safety measures, inclusion of road safety steps as a school curriculum and mandatory implementation of high security number plate in vehicles were discussed at a meeting of Road Safety Council held under the chairmanship of Union Transport Minister Oscar Fernandes some days back at the national capital.
