Manipur Postal Division observed World Post Day at the office of the Director Postal Services, Manipur today.
Speaking at the occasion, Manipur Postal Division Director T Mang Min Thang said, the purpose of observing the day is to create awareness on the role of postal sector in people's lives and its contribution to the social and economic development of different countries.
Informing that Universal Postal Union has 192 members including India, Mang Min Thang said that the celebration encourages member countries to undertake programme and activities aimed at generating a broader awareness of Post's role and activities to the public and media on national scale.
Saying that Manipur will be celebrating National Postal Week from October 9 to 15, T Mang Min Thang said that organising customers' meet, display of stamps, visit to post offices by public etc would be the main highlights of the celebration.
Regarding business development, T Mang Min Thang said that an amount of Rs 1.63 crore was collected during 2012-13 fiscal as compared to Rs 1.43 crore of 2011-12 fiscal year.
He added that as many as 3.90 lakh savings bank accounts have been opened till date.
