Civil society organisations of Kangpokpi district have taken a number of crucial decisions during a joint meeting today, including the decision that henceforth there will be no chiefs' association except the Sadar Hills Chiefs' Association (SAHILCA) .
Further it was also agreed that henceforth no other civil society organisations would be allowed to be set up or granted recognition except those which attended the meeting today.
The civil society organisations in existence and given recognition are Kuki Inpi Kangpokpi, Thadou Inpi Kangpokpi, KSO Sadar Hills, TSA Sadar Hills, Thadou Youth Association (TYA), Vaiphei People's Council (VPC) Kangpokpi, Gangte Tribe Union (GTU) Kangpokpi, Zillai Kang-pokpi, Gangte Students' Organization (GSO) Kangpokpi, Kuki Women Union Kangpokpi, Thadou Women Association Kang-pokpi, Kom Rem Students' Association Kangpokpi.
According to SAHILCA, the joint meeting also unanimously resolved that sale of land or on lease shall be strictly prohibited in the district and if any land is on lease its duration must not be extended in any way.
The joint meeting also unanimously and strongly resolved to ban poppy cultivation in the district.
It was also resolved that Kangpokpi district civil society organizations will collectively pursue and do the needful in matters pertaining to land records, forest reserve, panchayat election, police boundary, etc., and shall jointly fight for the welfare of the district.
Ban on quarrying in Kangpokpi district by Department of Commerce and Industries, Government of Manipur is not endorsed by SAHILCA, and as such it [ban on quarrying] has been revoked by SAHILCA and Kangpokpi CSOs, added the statement.
As the Government of Manipur order dated June 15, 2013, pertaining to handing over of Land Records to the district Deputy Commissioner is yet to materialize, the joint meeting urged the Government for speedy implementation of its order and in case of any issues or problems arising out of it, the Government of Manipur shall be solely responsible and blame should not be upon SAHILCA and Kangpokpi district civil society organizations.
The joint meeting also resolved that departments including Forest and Police from other districts shall no more be allowed to execute any activities within the jurisdiction of Kangpokpi district.
