Imphal, March 16 2022:
As directed by Congress president Sonia Gandhi, president of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) N Loken resigned from the post today.
Sonia Gandhi had asked the PCC presidents of Manipur, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab and Goa to put in their resignations as the party suffered crushing defeat in the Assembly polls held in the five States.
The Congress party which emerged as the single largest party in the 2017 Manipur State Assembly election by bagging 28 seats in the 60 member House managed to win only five ACs in the recent polls.
In his resignation letter addressed to Sonia Gandhi, N Loken said that he opted to resign to take moral responsibility for the poor performance of the Congress in the Assembly election.
Notably, N Loken also lost the Nambol seat to a BJP candidate Thounaojam Basanta Kumar Singh by a margin of 3060 votes.
Returning Officer of AICC's Manipur Pradesh Pratap Bhanu had also announced that an election will be for MPCC starting from the booth level.
According to credible sources, the AICC has not yet shared the probable names who might be appointed as the next MPCC president.
