Imphal, March 16 2022:
State Directorate of Language Planning and Implementation organised a symposium on 'Multiculturalism and aspects of translation' at Manipur Press Club here on Wednesday.
Attending as moderator of the symposium, Dhanamanjuri College of Arts faculty Dr S Lanchenba Meetei opined that having good translators could help in appreciating the real beauty of Manipuri literature, which is in no way inferior to other literatures of the world.
However, lack of exposure has been hindering literary works of Manipur from gaining popularity, he said.
Though Manipuri literature is said to be illustrious, it could not achieve higher literary accolades like Saraswati and Kalidash awards.
It is not because of poor quality of the literary works, but the inability to extensively translate the rich Manipuri literature and make it known to the world, Lanchenba explained, while stressing the need for good translators to make people across the world appreciate the beauty and quality of Manipuri literature.
He maintained that translation is a daunting task yet an important part of literature.
There is a need to groom and encourage young writers to become good translators, Lanchenba stressed.
Despite being a rich language, Manipuri is facing extinction.
Many words common in earlier days are no more in use.
As such, there is an urgent need to look into the matter for protection and preservation of Manipuri language, he added.
Various resource persons spoke on different topics during the symposium.
