Imphal, March 09 2022:
A molotov cocktail (petrol bomb) was thrown at a vehicle in which women polling personnel were travelling to proceed towards the strong room at Ukhrul mini scretariat on March 5 after completing poll at Khamphason Polling Stations.
Presiding Officer Mrs Wormichon Vashum and Polling Officer Premila Devi were hurt in the incident and are currently receiving medical treatment for burn injuries.
Condemning the incident which took place at Khamphason Polling Stations, a joint statement released by the all women polling team on poll duty at 43-Phungyar, 44-Ukhrul and 45-Chingai ACs said they have been left highly traumatized as they were subjected to unprecedented acts of intimidation, force and violence at their respective polling stations.
The statement also expressed appreciation to the police and security personnel whose prompt and timely action saved the lives of the Mrs Wormichon Vashum and Premila Devi.
Premila Devi had lost consciousness from the impact of the molotov cocktail which left the vehicle completely charred.
The women urged the Government and the ECI to take cognizance of such crime and immediately initiate legal proceedings and punish the perpetrators of the crime with a fitting punishment.
The joint statement also said without proper security measures in place, enlisting of exclusive women teams may appear as mere decorative acts of sending them to war zones unarmed, untrained as mere sitting ducks.
