Imphal, July 13 2015 :
A Councillor of Imphal Municipal Council was allegedly slapped by a police officer and detained for one hour in police station.
Speaking to media persons at IMC complex today, Ward No 3 Councillor Hijam Nutanchandra said that Ward No 12 Councillor Ahanthem Romakanta tried to intervene on seeing some police personnel severely thrashing a group of youngsters who were taking part in the mass protest for enforcement of ILPS in the State at Keishamthong Ahanthem Leikai at around 6.10 pm of July 11 .
But Commando City Unit OC Thaingampao who was leading the police team responded by physically assaulting Romakanta.
Apart from thrashing the Councillor in the most brutal manner, the Councillor was detained in police station for one hour.
Saying that Romakanta did not take part in the agitation, Nutanchandra questioned whether the State is run by police.
He urged the Chief Minister and the Deputy Chief Minister to take up befitting action against the police officer and personnel involved in assaulting an elected Councillor.
He also demanded removal of police team currently stationed within the IMC compound.
He went on to ask if elected Members have no right to intervene and save innocent civilians from police brutality.
Nutanchandra said that all the 21 Councillors of IMC strongly condemned the assault on Romakanta.
IMC Chairperson A Nimai Sharma said that the police officer was humiliating all the Councillors by assaulting one Councillor.
The Government should take up befitting action against the police officer and his team, he demanded.
