Imphal, October 03 2019:
A minor girl has been allegedly sexually assaulted by a laboratory technician at RIMS casualty ward early this morning.
According to the mother of the 12 year old victim, the girl was taken to RIMS at around 2.30 am today as she was suffering from fever and dysentery.
After examining the girl, doctors who were on duty at casualty ward suggested certain laboratory tests including ECG.
At that moment, one man who claimed to be a laboratory technician took the girl inside a room in the name of taking ECG.
"As I saw no other staff inside the room, I went forward to enter the room but the laboratory technician stopped me outside the room saying that no harm would be done to the girl", the mother conveyed.
Contrary to what the laboratory technician's earlier said that it would not take long to take the ECG, it was more than 30 minutes before he came out.
In the meantime, the girl's father too arrived.
As soon as the father arrived, the laboratory technician came out and said that the problem was in appendix.
All this while, he behaved in a suspicious manner, the mother said.
"Later, when I went inside a toilet together with my daughter as she wanted to urinate, she narrated to me all what the laboratory technician did to her.
Immediately, the whole incident was informed to the police picket opened near RIMS casualty ward", the mother recounted.
After registration of a case in connection with the incident at Lamphel police station, the laboratory technician has been arrested while the victim has been examined at RIMS Forensic Science Department.
Meanwhile, RIMS Medical Superintendent Prof Ch Arunkumar told media persons at his office this afternoon that laboratory technician Thokchom Suraj (36) s/o Kulla of Keishamthong Moirangningthou Leirak has been terminated from service.
It is said that Suraj was working at RIMS on contract basis as a daily wage earner.
Prof Arunkumar said that around 1000 doctors and 2000 staff are working at RIMS.
As per guidelines, male doctors, paramedics, technicians and staff are reminded every now and then to be very careful while treating female patients.
The Medical Superintendent then appealed to all male doctors, paramedics, technicians and staff to behave in accordance with the guidelines while examining/diagnosing female patients.
He added that his appeal should treated as an order.
He further assured all possible assistance from the side of RIMS towards treatment of the victim.
