Lieutenant Colonel Oinam Akash, who is serving as an officer in 17th Kumaon Regiment, was conferred the gold medal (gallantry) by General Officer Commanding in-chief Central Command Lt Gen Yogendra Dimri as part of the Investiture Ceremony organised at Bakshi Parade ground of Jat Regimental Centre (JRS) in Bareilly on Friday.
Lt Col Oinam Akash was assigned the duty of protecting the borders from the enemies along the northern side of Pangong Tso in Eastern Ladakh in May 2020, as per the orders of his commanding officer.
Akash led the soldiers in defending the area from the enemies who were approaching from three sides, preventing the enemies from entering the India for over 5 hours.
However, they were outnumbered by the enemies, who then broke the barricade, thereby leading td a confrontation.
During the conflict, Lt Col Akash suffered serious injuries but continued to fight and deterred the enemies from approaching any further.
Thus, he was conferred the gallantry medal in recognition of his bravery and leadership.
During the ceremony, floral tributes were offered at the JRS war memorial and parade review was also held at Bakshi Parade ground.
