Locals stop campaigning during silent period

An altercation ensued today around 1.50 pm in front of INC candidate of Wangkhem AC, K Meghachandra Singh's residence at Yairipok Bishnunaha when BJP candidates of Khurai AC Leishangthem Sunsindro Meitei, Wangkhem AC Y Nabachandra Singh and Moirang AC Mairembam Prithviraj Singh took out an election campaign for the 2nd phase of 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly election 2022 .
An argument reportedly broke out between the locals of the area and the BJP team wherein two vehicles were also damaged.
A team of Manipur police promptly arrived at the spot and brought the situation under control.
Election Agent of K Meghachandra Singh, L Somorendro Singh has also submitted a complaint to the Chief Electoral Officer, Manipur and District Election Officer, Thoubal in this regard.
Wangkhem Block Mahila Congress members Samina and Laishram Sanatombi narrated their eye-witness account of the incident to the media.
They stated that in violation of the election code of conduct, the BJP candidates carried out their election campaign in front of the residence of INC candidate K Meghachandra during the silent period.
This enraged the locals of the area and they asked the BJP group to leave.
They refused and this led to a clash between the two parties.
The women further stated that their security personnel also fired shots which escalated the tense situation.
As per the guidelines laid down by the ECI, all election related campaigns must cease by 4 pm March 3, they said and further appealed the authorities concerned to take up appropriate action against the three BJP candidates for violating the ECI guideline.
