Imphal, November 14 2021:
While strongly condemning the recent burning of paddy plants kept piled for threshing, All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) has said that government should look into the matter and take the incident seriously.
In a release, AMSU secretary general Bikramjit Thongam said that burning of ready-to-harvest paddy plants, after hard labour of farmers is inhumane.
The farmers had faced several inconveniences this year because of scanty rainfall.
Moreover, lack of urea fertilisers worsened the situation, he continued.
Pointing out that huge sum is spent in buying food grains as the food produced by the farmers of the state could not suffice the need of the people, Bikram stressed that the production will be less even more this year.
As such, there is apprehension that the price of food grains will increase in the coming year.
It is unfortunate that some miscreant(s), who are enemy of the people, burnt ready to harvest paddy plants in the midst of such crucial situation, he contended.
Bikram maintained that the failure of the government to arrest and punish the culprits of similar arson incidents in the past has encouraged the miscreants to indulge in such destructive and anti-social acts without any fear or remorse.
Stating that burning of paddy plants stacked for harvest should be considered as a big loss for both the people and the government, he maintained that the government should look into the matter seriously.
If the government remains silent, thinking it as issue of few farmers, then people will consider the state government as a failure which cannot ensure security of life and property of the people, he added.
