Imphal, November 14 2021:
A sit-in protest was staged today at Sagolband Mabudhou Mantri Leikai urging the State Government to send a recommendation to the Centre for inclusion of Meitei/Meetei in the ST list.
The sit-in was organised by the Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee of Manipur (STDCM) in collaboration with Sagolband Young Pioneers Club and Meira Paibis of the area.
Speaking to media on the sideline of the protest, W Ananda Meetei, publicity secretary STDCM, said STDCM and the people of the State have been demanding inclusion of Meitei/Meetei in the ST list but the Government has not paid any heed to this demand.
The Central Government had sought recommendation from the State Government regarding the inclusion of Meitei/Meetei which is an indigenous community of the State in the ST list way back in May 29, 2013, he added.
With the State Government staying silent on the matter, the Central Government had repeatedly sought the recommendation but the State Govt has been sleeping over the issue.
During a visit of the Union Home Minister to the State on December 27, 2020, STDCM had submitted a memorandum raising the issue but the Home Minister had informed that without any recommendation from the State, the Central Government cannot do anything on the issue, W Ananda Meetei added.
