EGM, MHJU mull boycott of Govt events over unpaid bills

Editors Guild Manipur (EGM) and Manipur Hill Journalists Union (MHJU) have urged the government to clear all pending advertisement bills laying with various government departments.
In a joint memorandum to the IPR minister, EGM and MHJU informed that a joint meeting of the two organisations resolved to request the government to release the pending bills latest by December 10 to enable the media houses to continue their operation.
The meeting also resolved to take up various activities including media censure of government activities and boycott of government related news.
However, Covid-19 and law & order related issues will be kept out of any boycott plan, it added.
EGM and MHJU stated that the media in Manipur are in distress mode following the Covid-19 pandemic which has impacted all walks of life.
The memorandum recalled that the media in Manipur continued to render its valuable service to the public even as the pandemic ravaged the state and several sectors were locked down.
The media personnel continued to work despite the pandemic to keep everyone informed and safe even as they themselves were exposed to the threat.
The media houses that enabled this valuable service to the state are now in a dire situation as advertisement bills as old as two years running into several lakhs of rupees are pending with various government departments, it pointed out.
