Thoubal, January 13 2023:
Irate local residents of Wangjing area on Friday removed a portion of road median along NH102 (Imphal-Moreh), which was constructed by GR Infra Projects Ltd on Thursday night, on the ground that the newly constructed road median has severely affected movement of public as well as essential services.
Later, a team of Thoubal district police came and prevented further destruction of the median while urging the protestors to raise their complaint to the DC.
Interacting with the media, a woman vendor said that the road project taken up by NHIDCL has already been completed in the area by clearing the particular portion of the road median for facilitating road crossing by installing all road markings including zebra crossings.
It is an important road crossing for people of Wangjing, Kairembikhok, Salungpham and many hill villages of Tengnoupal district.
Blocking the road crossing will force commuters, especially from the nearby villages to go all the way up to Khongjom to cross the road.
Even in the event of accidents and fire tragedies, ambulances and fire tenders shall have to cross the way only from Khongjom, and it lacks complete sense and logic, she said.
She urged the DC to visit the site and verify their claim personally.
The protestors also demanded the authority to block crossings in front of DC office, SP office, IRB posts and Heirok Lamkhai if they think the crossing at Wangjing Keithel is unworthy.
They demanded the DC to Conduct spot verification to understand their plight and issue necessary instruction for clearing the blocked crossing.
At the same time, local people of Lilong area also removed a 15 feet long portion of road median along NH 102 in Lilong Tairen Makhong area on Friday.
Police stopped the public from removing further structures.
